A new philosophical analysis of aging research highlights how the field’s most influential framework, the Hallmarks of Aging, has become central not only to experimental biology, but also to how scientists define aging itself.

Despite decades of progress, aging research continues to lack full consensus on foundational questions: what aging is, why it occurs, how it should be measured, and how it can be effectively treated as a medical condition. As a result, much of the field’s scientific discourse has focused not only on data and interventions, but also on competing definitions and conceptual frameworks that attempt to organize the study of aging.

Over the past 30 years, several major frameworks have emerged to structure this debate. Early efforts such as the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) presented aging as a set of root causes to be repaired through targeted intervention, explicitly linking scientific goals with humanitarian aims. Later, more widely adopted frameworks such as the Hallmarks of Aging and Pillars of Aging shifted the focus toward cataloging the observable manifestations and mechanisms of aging, helping standardize research directions across laboratories and disciplines.

Today, the Hallmarks of Aging have become a dominant reference point in geroscience, often functioning as a de facto checklist for organizing research priorities and therapeutic strategies. A recent open-access analysis examines this influence through multiple philosophical lenses, including Kuhn, Lakatos, Laudan, Kitcher, and Galison, to better understand how scientific fields stabilize around shared conceptual structures despite persistent disagreement.

From a Kuhnian perspective, the Hallmarks function as a guiding paradigm for “normal science,” shaping what counts as valid evidence and which research questions are considered solvable. A Lakatosian interpretation frames the framework as a theoretical core surrounded by a flexible set of auxiliary models, allowing empirical expansion without fundamental disruption. Meanwhile, Laudan’s problem-solving view suggests that the Hallmarks reorganize rather than eliminate open questions, embedding them within a more coherent methodological structure.

Other perspectives emphasize the social and practical role of the framework. Kitcher’s analysis highlights its success in coordinating research through shared reference points, while Galison’s concept of “trading zones” describes how the Hallmarks facilitate collaboration between otherwise divergent scientific communities by providing a common language for exchange.

Importantly, the analysis argues that the significance of the Hallmarks extends beyond classification. Rather than resolving core disagreements in aging biology, the framework may have enabled the field’s continued progress by stabilizing a shared conceptual space in which research can proceed despite unresolved theoretical foundations.

This structuring role becomes especially evident in light of recent compilations of open questions in aging research, many of which are framed directly within the conceptual boundaries established by the Hallmarks. The result is a field that is both highly active and still fundamentally in search of unified agreement on its deepest mechanisms.

As aging research continues to expand, the debate over its foundational frameworks remains central, not only for guiding scientific discovery but also for shaping how the field defines its own goals, methods, and ultimate purpose.
