
New Research Suggests Two Anti-Aging Treatments May Work Better Together
Scientists are exploring whether two promising anti-aging treatments could be more effective when used together than on their own.
A new scientific paper looks at combining therapeutic plasma exchange, which refreshes the blood by removing some harmful age-related substances, with partial epigenetic reprogramming, an experimental treatment designed to help older cells behave more like younger ones.
The researchers believe the two approaches target different parts of the aging process and could complement each other.
Two Different Ways to Fight Aging
Therapeutic plasma exchange works outside the body’s cells. It removes inflammatory and other harmful substances from the blood that build up with age. This may improve communication between cells and reduce chronic inflammation throughout the body.
Partial epigenetic reprogramming works inside cells. It aims to restore some of the genetic instructions that become disrupted with age, helping cells function more like they did when they were younger.
Researchers say each treatment has strengths, but each also has important limitations.
Both Treatments Are Still Experimental
Partial epigenetic reprogramming remains in the early stages of development. One of the biggest challenges is safely delivering the treatment to enough cells throughout the body. Current gene therapy methods cannot yet reach all tissues effectively, and different cell types may require different doses.
Therapeutic plasma exchange also needs more research. Scientists still do not know the best treatment schedule or how much benefit most people can expect. Large clinical trials that could answer these questions are expensive, and there has been little commercial interest in funding them.
As a result, some clinics outside the United States and Europe may continue offering versions of plasma exchange or plasma dilution before strong clinical evidence becomes available.
Looking Ahead
The authors say the key question is not whether one treatment is better than the other. Instead, they believe future research should determine whether addressing both the body’s overall environment and the health of individual cells at the same time produces better results.
They recommend more studies to understand how these therapies interact and to develop reliable ways to measure whether combined treatments truly slow or reverse aspects of aging.
While the idea is promising, both treatments remain experimental. More research will be needed before doctors know whether using them together is safe or effective.
